The Fund The Zambia First Investment Fund (ZFIF) has been initiated by Zambians in the Diaspora. The ZFIF was mooted late 2008 by two BlogTalkRadio members; Dr. Richard Mbewe, a Fund Manager, Managing Partner & CEO of Poland-based Atria Real Estate, and James Mwape, the Developer and Manager of the Zambia Braindrain website (mwape.com) based in New Jersey, USA. Past Negative Perceptions of Diaspora Zambian Zambians in the Diaspora have hitherto been viewed as failures that could not make any meaningful contribution to the development of Zambia. While the ZFIF is slowly evolving, the project is an unquestionable answer to some of the criticism and negative political rhetoric previously directed at Zambians in the Diaspora. However, recent events indicate a change of heart on the part of the Zambian leadership that appears to be opening and warming up to overtures extended by Diaspora Zambians for the need to work with Government as partners in the development of the country. Government Support for ZFIF At inception the ZFIF Initiators widely circulated e-mails to Zambians all over the world including Zambian Missions. The project proposal was warmly received and largely viewed as practical with the potential to make significant contribution to the development of Zambia. Interestingly enough, the ZFIF project has already received unequivocal and overwhelming support from the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA), the organization responsible for attracting direct foreign investment to Zambia. Objectives of ZFIF The educational backgrounds of Zambians in the Diaspora are as diverse as their economic status. An educated and conservative guesstimation puts the total number of Zambians in the Diaspora at well over one hundred thousand. The seer size of this group in itself points to the fact that, collectively, this group of Zambians wields enormous financial sway that can make an indelible mark and change the Zambian investment landscape and how the Diaspora is viewed. For far too long, these Zambians have not made serious investment into Zambia. Therefore, the ZFIF envisages that Zambians in the Diaspora will embrace this project by investing money which in turn will be directed at providing capital to economically feasible and fundable projects in Zambia and for Zambians. The ZFIF presents a golden opportunity for all those Zambians in the Diaspora who have a vision to be part-owners of the Fund. Ultimately, the Fund will act as the economic vehicle that will help to chart financial destiny of every Zambian that will invest in ZFIF. The Goal of ZFIF Once the Fund is finally set up and operational, the goal will be to provide capital to fundable projects initiated by Zambians. The requirement would be that all potential projects meet stringent funding criteria. In turn projects would be expected to spur development through the creation of jobs and contribution to the treasury through the payment of taxes. Call for Expression of Interest to Invest in the Fund The Fund will be a flagship carrier for all the Zambians in the Diaspora and will symbolize the Diaspora’s commitment to contribute to the development and economic growth of Zambia. The ZFIF has presented itself to all the patriotic Zambians as a huge investment opportunity. Success is easy to achieve when individuals join forces to put their fragmented resources together to work collectively for the common good. When fully functional the ZFIF will offer various levels of streamlined investment choices that investors will deem suitable. Therefore, this is a call to all the Zambians in the Diaspora and in Zambia to contact initiators of the ZFIF indicating the level of investment one intends to make in the Fund.
