Born in 1970, Serge spent most of his youth in Africa. After getting physics degree in 1991 with highest honor, he began research in theoretical physics. He specifically studied black hole evaporation and related questions dealing with particle creation in external fields. He defended his PhD in 1995 with highest honours (La Plus Grande Distinction).

From 1995 to 1997 he was a post-doctoral researcher at Tel Aviv University in Israel and from 1997 to 1998 at Utrecht University in Netherlands. During this period he got increasingly involved in the nascent field of quantum information. In 1998 he went back to the Université Libre de Bruxelles as a Research Associate of the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS), and since 2003 he is a Senior Research Associate of the FNRS. In 2003 he was awarded the Alcatel-Bell prize of the FNRS for his research on experimental quantum information processing. Since 2004 he has directed the Laboratoire d’Information Quantique, which is one of the three groups which constitute the “Centre Interdisciplinaire d’Optique et d’Information Quantique”. His main research topics nowadays are quantum information sciences, both from the point of view of theory and from the point of view of implementations in quantum optics. He has participated in several European projects in quantum informati, including one (RESQ) as coordinator. He has co-authored 70 publications in leading physics journals.

Research interests

During his thesis Dr. Massar mainly worked on black hole radiation, but he gradually got interested in the emerging field of quantum information, and this later became his main centre of interest. He has worked on many aspects of quantum information, including quantum measurements, quantum cloning, quantum error correction, quantum non locality, quantum computers, and quantum optics. Initially his interests were on the theoretical aspects of quantum information, but since 2002 he has directed, within the “Centre Interdisciplinaire d’Optique et d’Information Quantique” of the ULB, an experimental group which explores how the promises of quantum information can be realised in quantum optics. In this context he has realized the first experimental demonstration of error filtration (a method for detecting errors in quantum communication) and the first experimental demonstration of quantum string flipping (a novel protocol in quantum cryptography).

Dr Mwansa, Director of Education SSW in Botswana is the first international scholar appointed by the Katherine Kendall Institute, Council on Social Work Education.

As the first president of the African Scholars of Social Work, he will focus his work in the U.S. on developing the African Association. By opening the workings of CSWE, including the educational policy commission and then global commission he will offer means by which the African Association might develop.

He will also be a University Scholar at the University of Kentucky where he is keynote speaker for the University's College of Social Work’s weekly event. Dr. Silavwe's research interests are in the area of synthetic inorganic chemistry. He is focused on the design and development of ligands that have the potential of forming metal complexes with interesting structural, magnetic, optical, electrochemical and electrical properties. The structures of the ligands are to be engineered in such a way that the resulting complexes will be endowed with the desired properties. His on-going research activities are: (1) Synthesis and study of metal complexes of 1,3-hydroxydithiocarboxylate (1,3-HDTC-) ligands, and (2) synthesis and study of metal complexes of biuret and its derivatives. Bishop Mwamba trained for the priesthood at Saint Stephen’s House, Oxford, and was ordained in 1984 at Saint Luke’s Chelsea in London and served his curacy in the Parish of All Saints, Notting Hill before returning to Zambia where he was priested in Ndola in 1985. As Rector of Luanshya, he also assumed the responsibilities of Vocational Director for the Diocese of Central Zambia.

In 1987 he was appointed Provincial Secretary of the Church of the Province of Central Africa (The Anglican Church in Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe). He was created the first Provincial Canon of the Province by Episcopal Synod in 1991. He also served as his personal assistant and Legal advisor to the then Archbishop of Central Africa, Dr. Khotso W. P. Makhulu.

In 1999, he became a non-stipendiary Priest and worked for five years as a banker as Head of Legal and Compliance, Corporate Affairs and Company Secretary at Standard Chartered Bank Botswana Limited. He was appointed Vicar General of the diocese of Botswana in 2002 and consecrated Bishop of Botswana on February 6, 2005.

He has sat and continues to sit on numerous boards such as Transparency International (Botswana), and the Botswana Human Rights Centre (Ditshwanelo). He has also drafted constitutions for the Botswana Council of Churches and Young Women’s Christian Fellowship.

He has lectured as a visiting Professor at the University of Ohio. Bridget who has 20 years working experience specializes in trade policy formulation and implementation, trade negotiations, international trade issues, regional integration and, export development and promotion. Prior to this assignment, she was at the Commonwealth Secretariat, in London, UK where she designed and managed the Commonwealth Secretariat's flagship project on trade capacity building (Hub and Spokes Project under Trade.com) worth 20 million Euros. She also served as Zambia's chief negotiator from 1994 to 1998.

Chrispin was born at his grandfather Kawa (William) Ntungo Simukwanya’s village by River Mwame, in Mbala, Zambia, Africa on November 4, 1961. People called the village William after his grandfather’s English name.

He attended Mbala Government School from 1970 to 1976 and Isoka Secondary School from 1977 to 1981. He was admitted to the University of Zambia School of Agricultural Sciences in November 1982. After completing his Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences degree in July 1987, he accepted a Training Instructor position at the Natural Resources Development College (NRDC) in Lusaka.

In April 1988, Chrispin was retained by the University of Zambia as a Staff Development Fellow. He pursued his Master’s degree in Agribusiness Management from 1988 to 1991 at the University of Manitoba. After achieving his master’s degree he worked as a Lecturer at the University of Zambia in 1992. In January 1993, he returned to the University of Manitoba to pursue his doctorate degree in Agricultural Economics, which he earned in October 1996.

Chrispin met the sweetheart of his life Grace Kamanga at the University of Zambia in 1992. The two were married on August 8, 1993 in Lusaka and have since been blessed with four children Myazwe, Mbawemi, Chawezi and Mutende.

Chrispin has dedicated himself to writing and training to inspire, motivate and empower individuals to recognize and exploit their potential while achieving their goals since 2003. Florence is a human rights lawyer with the Department of Justice, Canada. She is a member of the Bar in Ontario, a Solicitor of the Court of Appeal of Ontario and the Superior Court of Justice. She is an accomplished public civil servant with 17 years Federal and Provincial government experience in providing legal and policy on issues such as human rights law, anti-discrimination, employment equity, gender and equality issues.

As a Senior Policy Advisor, Florence was recognised with a Government of Canada merit award for a distinguished contribution to the Privy Council Office for supporting and providing advice to the office of the Prime Minister of Canada on issues related to the Prime Minister’s prerogative for appointments to public office such as successive Deputy Minister shuffles, diplomatic corps and appointments of CEOs to Boards and Agencies. She served in this capacity from 2005-2007.

Florence served with the Ontario provincial government from 1990 to 1994, as Special Advisor to a Cabinet Minister and the Attorney General of Ontario. She is also a former Ontario provincial prosecutor.

Rev Mutale was trained in journalism and served in the media for three years after high school in 1975. A switch to personnel administration followed rising to the rank of Human Resources Manager for a mining subsidiary company. In between, Rev Mutale learned operations management, and was instrumental in opening an office for World Vision in Zambia. He served as Project Coordinator and Operations Manager which also served as a deputy director position.

In August 1975, the most significant life event took place when the young seventeen year old in the last year of high school gave his life to Jesus Christ. In 1987, Rev Mutale began theological studies in Zambia. By fortune of Mrs. Mutale’s commonwealth scholarship, the family moved to Canada in 1988.

Rev Mutale served a two point all white parish in the Annapolis Valley for eight years. In 1998, he became pastor of Victoria Road United Baptist Church in Dartmouth following the retirement of the legendary Dr Donald E. Fairfax. At Victoria Rd, Rev Mutale established many different types of community projects in the church covering youth employment, literacy development for adults, and work readiness programs. He has a strong community emphasis. He is also an avid sportsman who enjoys playing, coaching and refereeing soccer. In 2002, he became Regional Minister for Region VII, the African United Baptist Association. He is now in the early stages of doctoral work.

He is currently working on the fire safety engineering analysis of buildings of various occupancy types using design fires derived from realistic fire scenarios.

Munyonzwe is one of Canada's most successful legal heavyweights. His legal prowess and success did not come overnight. Hanneke'S thesis focused on the relationship between the structural complexity of corals and associated reef fish communities and the assessment of impact of small-scale fisheries in the Spermonde Archipelago, Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Her working career started as Fisheries Biologist for the Netherlands Institute for Fisheries Research in the Netherlands where she conducted research on the catch composition and population dynamics of target and non-target fish species in the Dutch beam trawl fishery and on alternative fishing methods to reduce by-catch.

Longing to return to the tropics, in 1999 Hanneke took up a position as (coastal/marine) Technical Advisor for a conservation project in the Philippines for the Netherlands Development Agency. Here she worked closely with local communities, conducted extensive coastal monitoring and training activities, and developed an integrated coastal management plan for the area.

In 2001 she moved to Kenya to join the United Nations Environment Programme, Regional Seas Programme where she dealt with a broad set of issues, including small islands issues, cetacean management, mangrove response to climate change and marine invasive species. Since September 2006 she works in Hamilton, Canada for UNU-INWEH as programme officer coastal zones, and together with Dr. Peter Sale manages and coordinates coastal projects, including the Dubai project.

From 1992 to 1998 she was a freelance consultant for various NGOs, Multilateral and Bilateral Agencies, as well as for a number of Local Authorities and as advisor / Consultant specifically for the cities of Lusaka (Zambia), Lilongwe (Malawi), and Harare (Zimbabwe) on Urban Poverty Reduction, Governance and Environmental Management and gender mainstreaming. She was also on a long term consultancy with the FAO / ALCOM programme in the Regional Office for Southern Africa as a socio – Economist, credit Manager – women’s Finance Trust Co. of Zambia and as Programme Economist for the Poverty Alleviation Project for the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, in Zambia.

Prof. Luke Kanyomeka, who has over twenty years of experience in teaching at university level, research, community outreach and administration is the winner of Namibia's 2009 Scientist of the Year Award. Dr. Kasuka Mutukwa was elected first Secretary General of the Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum in 1999.

The Forum is an autonomous regional organisation of 12 Parliaments of Southern Africa with 2000 MPs (from South Africa to Mauritius and Angola to Mozambique). He is the CEO of the Forum responsible for establishing the Forum's corporate and institutional development.

Under his stewardship, he initiated the adoption by the MPs of the region of a Strategic Plan (2000-2005) with emphasis on Governance, Gender Equity and regional thrust on enhancing the role of parliamentary leaders in addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic all within the context of regional integration including creating conditions for wider markets and investment opportunities.

He has co-ordinated all of the Forum's Election Observation Missions in 13 SADC Presidential and Parliamentary Elections involving 600 MPs and staff of Parliaments. The SADC Parliamentary Forum was the first regional organisation in Africa to develop Norms and Standards for Democratic elections.

He has been re-elected Secretary General of the SADC Parliamentary Forum for a further 5 years. As Secretary General, he is coordinating the development of the second Strategic Plan of the Forum (2005-1010). Following a Needs Survey in the region, at the behest of Dr Mutukwa, the SADC Parliamentary Forum has launched a Leadership Parliamentary institution for MPs and staff of the region.

In 2003, he contested as one of two candidates for the position of Deputy Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU) at AU Summit held at Maputo, Mozambique.

He also served as the Director General of the Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute (ESAMI).

From 1996 to 1999 he served as Member of Parliament for the Nalolo Constituency in Zambia where he chaired Parliamentary Committees on the Economy and Education and leadership oversight roles on Economy, Transparency, Gender and Human Rights issues. Mr. Simasiku has extensive experience of more than twenty years in the engineering field of which the last twelve years have been at policy and regulatory level in the energy sector. He started his career lecturing at the University of Zambia, School of Engineering. After working for a number of other organisations in Zambia he went to Namibia to work at the Ministry of Works, Transport and Communication before joining the Ministry of Mines and Energy. He started at the Ministry in 1993 as a Chief Energy Research. His focus was to promote renewable energy development, resulting in a chapter on renewable's being included in the Energy Policy of Namibia. He was later promoted to the position of Director of Energy where he was the initiator of the drafting of the Energy Policy and the integrated approach to energy development. He was eventually appointed to the position of Permanent Secretary or Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry.

He is at present also the Chairman of the Regional Electricity Regulators Association of Southern Africa (RERA). He has chaired and been on various boards of public and private companies. He has attended various conferences, workshops and seminars on energy and mining. Has played key role in many SADC energy projects and is now member of the Namibian National Energy Council (NEC) and ESI steering committee. Thomas Banda, born in Zambia now resident in New Zealand where he is currently working as Africa Programme Manager with Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA). VSA has been New Zealand's leading volunteer placement agency since 1962, placing people with skills and experience in carefully selected assignments in the Pacific, Asia and Africa regions. Thomas who frequently travels to Africa is in charge of overseeing the operations in the East and Southern part of Africa. The main focus of the VSA programme in Africa is to help reduce poverty, improve living conditions and create long-term sustainable livelihoods by supporting the development process within the selected countries of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Zambia.

Applying rare managerial skills and financial tact he set the firm on a paradigm shift that led to a 50 billion Kwacha surge and saved the sinking ship to profitability. Soon after that transformation the phd (pull him down syndrome) prevalent in some circles began, this was not helped with the change in government leading to his leaving public service and retiring at thirty-six.

He then launched a protracted 6-year legal battle and was to be vindicated in the multi-billion-kwacha legal settlement award to him in the Supreme Court of Zambia. He then delved into private practice and consultancy before the lure abroad launched him into the Diaspora. Alisand has scored some firsts including setting up the Revenue Appeals Tribunal of Zambia were he was the first: Registrar, Secretary to the Appeals Tribunal of the Bank of Zambia and Secretary to the Appeals Tribunal of the Pensions and Insurance Authority. Dr. Lufumpa joined the African Development Bank in March 1992 as a senior Economist-Statistician in the Central Projects Department responsible for formulating and analyzing the Bank’s policies and strategies for poverty reduction, environmental economic issues as well as coordination of the Bank’s lending program. In January 1996, he moved to the Strategic Planning, Policy and Research Department where he served in the same capacity until his appointment as Manager in the Statistics Division in September 1997, a position he held until his appointment in March 2007 as Director of the Statistics Department. Prior to his appointment as Director, Dr Lufumpa served from October 2005 as the Acting Director of the Bank’s Development Research Department.

Before joining the Bank, Dr Lufumpa had accumulated a total of nine years of working experience as a Senior Policy and Planning Economist in the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Development in Lusaka, Zambia. He also served as a visiting researcher from May 1984 to January 1985 in the Department of Economics, at Iowa State University, USA, on secondment by the Zambian Government to work on a large-scale mathematical programming study aimed at determining the least cost way of distributing maize in Zambia.

Elias is the Head of the Awareness Programmes at TB Alert. TB Alert is the UK's national and international Tuberculosis NGO - the only British NGO working solely on fighting TB in the UK and overseas. TB Alert also funds TB awareness and support projects in India, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Before joining TB Alert, Elias worked for Terrance Higgins Trust (the largest sexual health and HIV NGO in Europe) as the Sector Development lead for African Communities Prevention Programmes. Previously he worked for LIRDP (NORAD funded programme), as a Community Development Co-ordinator in Zambia.

Elias was a founding member of Zambians Abroad Skills Network (ZASN) whose activities are now delivered through Zambia Diaspora Connect (www.zambiaconnect.org), where he is a member. He is a Board of Directors for AAEGRO and Africa Focus, both of which are registered UK NGOs. Dr Chileshe is a former Executive Engineer at the Ministry of Works and Supply, Buildings Department in Lusaka, Zambia. He then joined Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick and Partners in 1992, in the Basingstoke offices as a Graduate Engineer working mainly in bridge design and site supervision. He enrolled on an MSc Construction Management Course at Sheffield Hallam University in 1993 and graduated in 1996. He then went on to do a PhD research program. Dr Chileshe is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building (FCIOB), Fellow of The Association of Building Engineers (FBEng), Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Management (MCIM). He worked part time lecturing as an RVL from September 1997 and was appointed as a full time lecturer in Construction Management and Quantity Surveying from May 1999. From March 2005 to September 2005 he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in South Africa conducting research into Construction within the Southern African Built Environment Research Center (SABERC).

Dr. Mutale, has been a Consultant Child and Adolescent Forensic Psychiatrist at St Andrew’s Hospital in Northampton since 1997. He is a doctor with specialist knowledge of mental health and has prepared reports on cases in court, social services, youth justice, the Criminal Injuries Board and Mental Health Review Tribunals. He is based at the largest secure psychiatric inpatient unit for young people in Western Europe. He is also a former member of the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales responsible for advising the Home Secretary and tasked with the development and funding of the entire UK youth justice system. His research interests include the influence of abnormal mental phenomena on adolescent offending or antisocial behavior.

Dr Mulenga is also Senior Chartered Engineer and Project manager. He has previously worked at the German "Bauhaus University Weimar" as a Lecturer & Scientist and at the "University of Birmingham" as Research Fellow. He holds a chain of Degrees including a PhD, Master of Science Degree and Bachelor's Degree in Civil Structural Engineering and Structural Materials. He has also studied Theology up to PhD Degree level.

In August 2005 Dr Mulenga organised a "Vision Sharing Meeting" at Thistle Hotel in Birmingham out of which 13 people signed in to run with the vision and break forth. This was marked by our first church service in Birmingham in October 2005. Since then the church has been experiencing rapid growth with God working signs and miracles in our services.

At Sky she works on the world shift, broadcasting to Africa and Asia during the period when Britain is asleep, hunting out major news stories, arranging interviews and keeping up with breaking news around the world. Her ‘day’ starts at 7pm, when she leaves her Leicestershire home for London, and she is on air from midnight until 6am.

Dr. Zumla is a highly accomplished phycisian, educator and author among other things. Chola Mukanga is an Economic Advisor in Her Majesty’s Government Economic Service. He has responsibility to advise the Department for Transport on aviation policy with special focus on future developments of Stansted and Heathrow Airports. This includes market analysis, appraisal and modelling of surface access transport, econometric analysis of air travel, financial assessment of projects and economic advice on any other aspect of aviation policy. Dr. Kafwembe, (Mpelembe, 1997) joined Advantica in January 2005 after graduating from the University of Birmingham. For two years she worked in the Hazard and Risk Management practice as a Safety Engineer. In this role, she applied risk assessment methodologies to predict the frequency and consequence of failure on high-pressure gas pipelines as well as onshore and offshore installations. Specific examples include Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRAs) for LNG facilities and Land Use Planning (LUP) assessments for building developments planned in the vicinities of such installations. In this role she was involved in meetings with clients and in some cases gave presentations or workshops to them.

In January 2007 she moved to a Process Engineering role. She has been working on Availability modelling of offshore oil and gas installations. Jacqueline is an Adjunct Professor of International Law at Central Michigan University, Sociopolitics and Economics of Africa at Drexel University and Business Law at Briarcliffe College. She is a board member of Cool Young Entrepreneurs and a mentor in the New York Women’s Social Entrepreneurs incubator program. She is a radio talk show host for United Nations Yak, a United Nations podcast channel that highlights the contributions of youth in the non-profit and development sector, business, and politics. She is a 2008 Empire State Counsel, which is an honor awarded by the New York State Bar Association to attorneys that provide considerable time and effort to pro bono legal services. Jacqueline attended Davidson College where she received a BA in Political Science and International Studies in 2003. As a distribution Manager he prepared paper work for shipments of various commodities overseas. Dr. Ntaimo's research interests are in large-scale stochastic optimization with a focus on decomposition algorithms for stochastic mixed-integer programming; systems modeling & engineering processes; and discrete event modeling & simulation using DEVS. Some recent applications of interest are healthcare systems design, power generation adequacy planning, stochastic facility and resource location/allocation, supply chain inventory planning with private information, modeling & simulation for wildfire spread and containment, and emergency response for wildfire containment under uncertainty.

After his PhD, Dr Makala was appointed Assistant Director for Veterinary Research (Chief Veterinary Research Officer in Zambia) in MAFF, Veterinary Department. In 2000, he was awarded the prestigious Japanese Society for the promotion of Science postdoctoral fellowship at the National Research Center for Protozoan Diseases, Obihiro University in Hokkaido, Japan. Two years later he was appointed Foreign Visiting Professor, Immunology until 2003, when he relocated to the USA to take up a Type 1 Diabetes research appointment in the Center for Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine, Medical College of Georgia (MCG). He is currently an MCG immunologist in the Immunotherapy Center.

His research interest includes Infectious parasites, Infectious and autoimmune disease Immunology, cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying immunological phenomena; regulation of T cell activation by antigen-presenting cells; regulation of immune function by indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) in chronic infectious diseases (Leishmaniasis), inflammation and transplantation biology.

While at the DOE, Beston was a guest lecturer for two years at the Eastern and southern Management Institute (ESAMI) in Arusha, Tanzania. After leaving the DOE he joined the Center for Energy, Environment and Engineering Zambia Limited (CEEEZ) as the Technical Director for Research in Climate Change and Energy Studies. He was also the Project Manager for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Sponsored study on Climate Change.

Beston later formed a partnership company that was involved in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) in Lusaka. He also worked as a researcher with Robins Consultants before emigrating to the United States in 2002. He now works as the Environmental Engineer for Dart Container Corporation of Pennsylvania in Lancaster with Corporate Headquarters in Michigan. The company is the World's largest privately owned manufacturer of products for the food service industry. He is overall in-charge of ensuring company compliance with both the State and Federal Governments regulations on air quality, hazardous waste management and all environmental issues concerned with industrial production.

Frank, a former ZASTI graduate, was Zambia's first TV weatherman, if you remember those days when he used blackboard and chalk to forecast the weather! Since then he has taken his weather forecasting crusade from Zambia to New Jersey, USA, Japan, Honolulu, at the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) - National Weather Service and now in Guam, where mother nature's fury occurs at its highest levels.

When Frank left Honolulu, Hawaii he moved to the Western Office in Seattle, Washington, and then to the NOAA National Weather Service Office Office in Guam (check the webmaster for NOAA Guam) where the most number of typhoons (Tropical Cyclones/Hurricanes pass every year) and also the most number of Earthquakes occur in this pacific basin. Guam is one of the Marianas islands where the deepest ocean is....The Marianas Trench. By the way Guam is where America's day begin. Guam is the Furthest East you can go as part of USA.

Apart from forecasting Typhoons and making sure that all the Ships are safe in the PACIFIC Ocean, he is also participating in the NOAA Committee that is currently extending Tsunami warning system to as far as East African Coast through a UN / WMO project.

Dr. Kiran C. Patel, a native of Kabwe, studied in Zambia then went on to earn degrees from Cambridge and the University of London before heading to his father's native Gujarat, India for medical school.

After setting up medical practices in Kabwe, Zambia, it proved too limited for the couple. "We always wanted to grow and grow," his wife said. They moved to New York for graduate work at Columbia University, where he earned a specialization in cardiology, and his wife in pediatrics. They got their Green Cards in 1976 -- on Thanksgiving Day.
