Lawrence is a nursing expert, highly skilled Clinical Nurse Specialist; offering clinically focused nursing experiences in the fields of colorectal cancer management, general surgery and Stomal Therapy Nursing. He has a proven and extensive clinical background in excess of 27 years, with solid work experiences in medical-surgical nursing in Zambia, Botswana and New Zealand. His professional experience has mostly been spent in acute care settings and the classroom.
He has strong Christian values and beliefs of love and respect for family and human life.
Born in Kasama, Zambia he migrated to New Zealand in 2000, where he has now settled with his wife, Jane and 4 children. While in Zambia, he worked in various capacities, including staff nurse and nurse tutor in the Ministry of Health, and Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines at Nchanga School of Nursing in Chingola.
He also worked as a nurse lecturer in the Ministry of Health at the Institute of Health Sciences, Gaborone, Botswana for over 10 years before moving to New Zealand. In Botswana, he lectured and taught registered nursing students and did some administrative work. During his employment in both Zambia and Botswana, he served as examiner for the General Nursing Council of Zambia and Botswana, respectively.
In New Zealand, he has worked as a staff nurse, nurse educator and currently as a clinical nurse specialist for colorectal cancer management and Stomal Therapy.
He was appointed to his current position in 2007 by the New Zealand government, and he is based at MidCentral District Health Board, Palmerston North Hospital.

Thomas holds the following academic degrees:

Thomas Banda, born in Zambia now resident in New Zealand where he is currently working as Africa Programme Manager with Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA). VSA has been New Zealand's leading volunteer placement agency since 1962, placing people with skills and experience in carefully selected assignments in the Pacific, Asia and Africa regions. Thomas who frequently travels to Africa is in charge of overseeing the operations in the East and Southern part of Africa. The main focus of the VSA programme in Africa is to help reduce poverty, improve living conditions and create long-term sustainable livelihoods by supporting the development process within the selected countries of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Zambia.
Prior to coming to New Zealand, Thomas worked in journalism and as a Senior Investigations officer for the Anti Corruption Commission in Zambia. Thomas has lived in New Zealand since 1990. Before joining VSA he worked as an Analyst with the Community Development Group of the Department of Internal Affairs and was involved in the preparation of the bid to establish the Office of Ethnic Affairs. He holds a diploma in Journalism from Africa Literature Centre, a Pan African Journalism School in Zambia, he is also a graduate of the International Leadership Programme run by the UN Leadership Academy in Amman’ Jordan.
Thomas is past President of the Africa Association of New Zealand and is an active and supportive member of the African community in Wellington. His interest are soccer, jogging and world music.
