One of my favorite activities was on Thursday when we were assigned to speak to Middle or High school students about attending an HBCU or going to college in general. The excitement they had for me speaking to their class and answering their questions was truly remarkable. I spoke to two science classes and one literature class, you could tell these students were going to be leaders of a new tomorrow.
Since Atlanta, I have been greeted by warm hugs and kisses and congratulatory messages from staff, students, and faculty members. I am elated to celebrate another year with my UDC family on my birthday October 13. I feel very proud to have put the University of the District of Columbia on the map, and plan to continue to do so until my reign ends in April, 2009. That is when the next Miss University of The District of Columbia 2009-2010 WILL follow me and BRING the crown and title home! I know it will not be a walk in the park, but I will be there to every step of the way to help. I come to you from the beautiful lands of Lusaka, Zambia. I am Mwansa M. Changwe: 2008-2009 Miss University of the District of Columbia and 1st Runner Up Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame - "Bringing Dreams To Reality".
The new Miss University of the District of Columbia, Mwansa M. Changwe, a biology student from Lusaka, Zambia was crowned on April 2nd, 2008. Mwansa competed against eight other contestants to win one year of free tuition, a Washington Sports Club membership, a giant gift card and a $200 book s c h o l a r s h i p from the William Kellibrew Foundation.
Her court includes Taraesa M. Holland Miss H o m e c o m i n g and Paula Gibbs Miss Firebird. After accepting the title, Mwansa expressed feelings of joy, happiness and peace. "It means a lot to become Miss UDC. I take it as a blessing and a window of opportunity. I just hope to represent the school well and build on the legacy of past queens."
